Overview

Capabilities

Designed as a long-range vessel, deep space vessel, members of the Odyssey Class can operate for long periods of time away from support and feature a similar design lineage to Starfleet's greatest explorers of the past. The Odyssey features two main hull sections including an ovoid shaped primary hull and a secondary hull mounting two Warp Nacelles. Unlike many of its contemporaries, the Odyssey restores the connective pylon between the two hull sections; however, pylons have been split to reduce subspace wake at high speed. Like the Galaxy Class, the Odyssey incorporates the ability to separate its primary and secondary hulls without external support. In addition, the aft hull structure has been modified to incorporate a specialized drydock slip to house an integrated garrison ship that can be deployed to assist the Odyssey in its missions or to undertake short-term independent operations away from its mothership.

The first generation of Odyssey Class Starships were outfitted with the same Class 13 Warp Core as the Sovereign Class; however, due to research conducted by B'Elanna Torres of the Starfleet Corps of Engineers, Starfleet received access to Quantum Slipstream Drives in the late 24th Century. Due to this success, the Odyssey was quickly outfitted with a hybrid Quantum Slipstream/Warp Drive as its primary propulsion system, giving the Odyssey a broad operational range. While not a dedicated Quantum Slipstream Drive, the hybrid core allows the Odyssey to open a slipstream conduit for up to 30 minutes time, permitting the vessel to travel as far as 150 light-years before forced shutdown. Once a jump is complete it will take the hybrid core a minimum of 12 hours to reset, but the ship may use traditional propulsion methods during this recharge period. While the drive system has undergone extensive testing for reliability and function, the Odyssey cannot use the Slipstream as frequently as a vessel with a dedicated Slipstream Drive as catastrophic failure of the drive and the potential destruction of the vessel could occur.
